The second chip-tune competition
Our congratulations to all musicians, who got the highest scores: fast shadow (1st place), EstEps and tone (2nd place), X-ray (3rd place)! The winners will be awarded with our special certificate and tracking art CD.
The competition was organized by Igor Chistik with great support from Dmitry Kirillov (EstEps), Konstantin Yakimenko (Enger), Michael Cherdantsev (Eternal Engine), Alex Matchugovsy (Manwe), Gene J.B., Hally, Andrey Krugloff (Prizrak), Boris Tarasov and Alex Radzishevsky. Also, Viktor Shimakoff (Dblstar Lab), Pavel Morozov, Yury Oshepkov, Sergey Kashinsy (DJ Psych), Stas Kuzin (MadMinder) and Ian Luck were invited as official arbiters. However, only 10 persons formed the final jury stuff; others have refused their participation — its really hard to rate 40 works on 5 parameters, even if consider a work to be just a “music”, instead of “module”.
Also it would be far more difficult for me to solve some questions, without the help of Matchugovsky, Tarasov, Yakimenko and Gene J.B. Especial thanks goes to Dmitry Kirillov, who hardly has saved his freedom in exchange of a draft copy of our compo's special certificate (certificate design by — Dasha Kuchurova) ;)
Separately, a bit later i gonna publish my own competition report and the 32-nd issue of our monthly musicmakers review “musicMocker” titled “Alibaba and the Forty Theives” — comments from arbiters and my own remarks about the compo.

The column “N” — number of participant.
The column “Score” is a list of parameters, used to rate a module: (1) — “professionalism”, (2) — “musical value”, (3) — “originality”, (4) — “quality of a sound”, (5) — “optimality”. Final score of a module — (6) — is calculated by addition all the scores. The musical value — disclosing of a theme, “moral substance” of a composition, how much music is actually in the module. An optimality — is a ratio of a file size to the musical content, the tracking skill. The final result of each work {calculated by Excel} is the sum of all scores, divided on quantity of voted arbiters.
Brief comments on some worksModule N17, got the 2nd place. It is the work from one of the arbiters, and by rules of competition such modules can participate only as demonstration (cannot be the official winner, occupies the same place with the usual participant).
Module N34, got the 9th place. It is the work from one of the arbiters.
Module N27, DQ — disqualification, unfortunately. Arrange is generated by the computer. Probably I am not right, but this is more serious discrepancy, than breaking the deadline. Our compo is the competition of “live” music, instead of match “Kasparov — Deep Blue”.
Module N2, DQ — disqualification, unfortunately. The work is not original, is written based on 30-sec example to CakeWalk 9. The only positive thing from this work is the demonstration of more flexible opportunities of the tracking' arrange and advantages of good samples (16 bits, 44-22kHz) combined with a nice compression of the module.
Module N9, DQ — disqualification. It is an exact copy of the module “Arcadia” done in early 90's by Necros, in reduced and little bit modified kind. The beginning and the “hidden end” of the music are taken. The tips to figure this out — the figure by Andrew Sega in the participant form, e-mail in the domain Five Musicians and name of the author — Joke Jester ;-) The work was sent by me as a 1st April joke, especially for arbiters.
Module N31, got the 27th place. It is the work from one of the arbiters.
Module N5, DQ — disqualification. One more work from the virtual participant; read the name of work and name of the musician vice-versa. The explanations for this — read in musicMocker 32.
Module N15, DQ — disqualification. One more work from the virtual participant; read the name of work and name of the musician vice-versa.
The following modules broke some rules of the compo and possibly could be disqualified, but this time I let them take part in the compo.
And the last on modules, the brief explanation of arbiters “skips”.
I really regret, that initially i've decided to give too much freedom to the participants of our compo, thinking that our total busyness will give you all too small time for a such thing as a chip-compo (btw, our best hopes about quantity of works was around 20-25 modules). As a result of a policy of such kind, some rules of the compo has been broken. Partially that was my defect, partially — ' dishonesty ' from some of participants. Besides, I have not taken into account the possibility of “skip” votings. But nevertheless, the only serious problem of the compo was the huge number of platforms and mod formats appeared in one competition, it seems possible to combine them only theoretically, not on practice. This disballance appeared as a nonsense of some voting scores for a number of formats, and in general scene's “common opinion”.
Great thanks to all participants of our compo, RCTC will never be possible without you all! I am very grateful to our arbiters, who spent all their, even nonexistent, free time. Euggie have really made a feat... It is a pity, Tarasov and Kuzin simply “disappeared” somewhere, without informing us (probably took Evgeniy Danchenko (Zip) with them, and i awaited draft copy of our compo's special certificate from him!). Thanks to everyone, who has supported my idea and has helped må in its realization. And — thank you all for your patience :-) Compo has not met the deadline, and ìy own free time is strongly reduced now... I do not think about the future now, and the nearest compo we're planning is a Buzz compo with Gene J.B as organizer.
FilesThanks to Alex Radzishevskiy for mp3s hosting on websound.ru mp3 version of compo-music.
